Medel downplays incident

Gary Medel has explained to reporters the situation that saw him detained in Chile for an alleged assault on a journalist.

The Sevilla midfielder was pulled off a plane at Santiago Airport on Thursday for clashing with a reporter. It was alleged by the television reporter that the player had pushed her.

Medel, who has now returned to Sevilla, explained to the Press in Spain what happened from his viewpoint.

“They are heavier over there than they are here. I just wanted to push the microphone away but accidentally caught her hand. It was a special case because I had to get off the plane to make a statement, but in the end it has come to nothing and now I just want to think of Sevilla,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the club’s appeal to the CEDD [Spanish Sports Disciplinary Committee] to overturn the second game that Medel is still banned for after his dismissal against Barcelona has been rejected. It means the Chilean international will miss Monday’s match at home to Mallorca.
