Valdano bites back at Mourinho

Former Real Madrid director Jorge Valdano has continued his war of words with Los Blancos Coach Jose Mourinho.

The two had a fractious relationship when they worked together at the Bernabeu and Mourinho has twice this week made cryptic comments presumably aimed at Valdano, talking about 'Madrid fans in disguise' and this morning criticising the transfer decisions made when the Argentine was in charge of that area.

“I didn't take the hint when Mourinho talked about Madrid fans in disguise,” he told AS. “There are those who are pro Madrid, and those who are anti Madrid, but that is to be expected at a big club.”

Valdano then seemed to suggest that the Portuguese tactician is unworthy of the club's tradition.

“No one has an exclusive Madridista feeling. Mourinho spoke of the values that helped make Real Madrid. Those values are in the stadium, the anthem, in the discretion that characterised the great heroes of the club and the club's general behaviour.

“Since the arrival of [Alfredo] Di Stefano we must die on the pitch. As one Argentine journalist said, Di Stefano watered the pitch with his sweat.”

The former Merengues striker then made pointed reference to Mourinho's history as Barcelona assistant Coach.

“Besides he has already worked in Spain, on the other side of the street…”
