Mi casa, su casa they say. My house is your house. It is quite a friendly, welcoming statement, but how does it fare as a question?  Mi casa, su casa? Not this season, certainly not in La Liga where the treatment of guests is proving far from welcoming and quite the opposite in fact.

Nine teams are still without an away win. Among those still searching for a maximum away day haul are sixth placed Mallorca, perennial third placers Valencia and last season’s double Cup finalist’s Athletic Bilbao.

On top of that a further seven sides have won just once when venturing from their familiar surroundings this term, while only Barcelona and Atletico Madrid – the League’s current top two – can boast an unbeaten record on their travels. Only the former are still perfect.

Even Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho’s star studded, reigning champions, have already been the victim of two losses from four games away from the Santiago Bernabeu. Getafe and Sevilla were the teams to prompt the life outside the duopoly debate.

To compare this trait with the top Leagues in Italy, England and France, just Chievo, Southampton, Brest and Troyes are still searching for their first three points away from home, while in Germany’s Bundesliga only four sides are without an away win – Borussia Dortmund being one of those four.

At the same time in Spain, eight clubs have still not lost on their own territory. Just three – Real Betis, Real Zaragoza and Espanyol – have lost more than one game on their own patch and not one of the 20 sides has accumulated more points away than at home.

Real Sociedad best typify this early pattern. Philippe Montanier has led his side to nine points from three games at Anoeta, but away from their San Sebastian home they are yet to pick up a point. Even goals have been hard to come by, just two in their four matches.

This news is hardly ground breaking, the advantage has always been with the home side after all, but this season it appears to be proving even more beneficial. Last season relegated Racing Santander had the worst away record with only 11 points coming from their 19 away days, but even they managed to avoid defeat in nine matches.

Whether it is the partisan crowds – unlikely in many cases – that are proving the 12th man, the travelling time draining the visitors or something much more cryptic, La Liga is proving at this early stage that there really is no place like home.
