Aspas dreams of Bernabeu

Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas accomplishes a childhood dream when he faces Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

Despite Celta boss Paco Herrera having declared this week that his side have virtually no chance against Jose Mourinho’s men, Aspas says he is relishing the prospect of appearing at such a legendary stadium.

“Everyone dreams of playing at a venue like the Bernabeu from when they were a child,” he told a Press conference. “It is not only a test for me but the whole team to see what level we are it, although to withstand Real Madrid or Barcelona on their home ground is very difficult.

“We don’t fear anyone but we are aware that Madrid, along with Barca, are the best team in La Liga.”

Asked if Jose Mourinho could point to the number of injuries his side have as an excuse if they fail to beat the Galicians, Aspas was unconvinced.

“I don’t think so because they have a squad of 25 footballers, with some of the best players in the world. Besides, there would be no excuses if they had to play some of their reserves because this year they are in La Segunda.”

Herrera said some days ago that Los Celestes would struggle to hang on to Aspas - last term’s leading scorer with 22 goals – if he continued to show the form he has done since the start of the 2012-13 campaign.

“Compliments are nice but we’ll have to wait until the end of the season. Whatever is good enough for the club is good enough for me.

“A month ago I renewed my contract until 2017 and I have a clause of €10m written into it, so there’s nothing more to say,” explained Aspas.
