Falcao, Messi at the double

Both Radamel Falcao and Lionel Messi scored two goals for their countries last night, as both Colombia and Argentina kept pace in World Cup qualifying.

Atletico Madrid man Falcao’s double was enough to defeat Paraguay 2-0 in Barranquilla yesterday evening and temporarily see the Colombians take top spot in the CONMEBOL qualifying group.

“My second goal was similar to those I managed against Chelsea and Athletic Bilbao and why my right leg is getting jealous, because I am always scoring with the left,” joked Falcao afterwards.

“I had wanted to score [with the right foot] but I could not. But the left is on fire. We should enjoy this win, but with moderation.

“Our goal is the World Cup and there is still a long way to go. We must continue with the same intensity and the same mentality to go one game at a time achieving what we want.”

Colombia slipped back to second spot later in the day with Argentina’s win against Uruguay, which was settled by Barcelona forward Messi’s second-half double and a third from Sergio Aguero.

“I’m happy we were able to win again, people enjoy and feel that we are doing things right,” reflected Messi in the mixed zone after this game.

“We beat a good team, the Copa America champions, we were superior at all times and played well. They wanted to fight back, with counter-attacks through their forwards who are very fast, but we controlled things at all times.”
