Coentrao linked with Benfica return

Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao’s days at the Santiago Bernabeu could be numbered, with Benfica favourites to land him.

According to Cadena Ser, Madrid boss Jose Mourinho is contemplating letting the 24-year-old leave in the winter transfer market and will encourage a move back to his former club Benfica.

Coentrao signed for Los Blancos in June 2011 for €30m but has struggled to hold down a place in Mourinho’s starting line-up and has made just 21 La Liga appearances since.

Reports in Portugal have also confirmed that Madrid President Florentino Perez would be open to a return, with the player himself already having admitted that he would one day like to play in Lisbon again.

The Portuguese international played his last official match for Madrid in the second leg of the Supercopa de Espana against Barcelona, but has subsequently only been handed the opportunity to play in the Trofeo Santiago Bernabeu against Colombian outfit Millonarios.
