Ruben baffled by Betis axe

Real Betis striker Ruben Castro says he is baffled by boss Pepe Mel’s decision to axe him for last week’s game with Malaga.

Mel replaced the 31-year-old with Jorge Molina for the trip to La Rosaleda and an upset Ruben told Canal Sur radio programme El Pelotazo that he was at a loss to explain the reason.

“I don’t know what happened and I still don’t know. I did not expect it. The boss decided and I have little to say.

“I don’t’ understand it and I don’t know why, but he is the one who picks the team and anybody left out is always bothered about it. I’ll just continue to train hard,” said Ruben, who also commented on the refereeing of Alvarez Izquierdo in the 4-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

“It was unfortunate. Everyone saw what happened on the pitch except for the referee. These things happen in football and it happened to us.

“It was not just one or two important decisions but it’s over now and we have to look ahead.”

Ruben was also asked about Betis’ current situation and Mel’s change to the system of play.

“What matters now is points. The players are optimistic and we hope to leave behind the recent bad results.

“We know this is just the beginning of the season and the team is still not at 100 per cent, but we have a great side and we can do great things. We haven’t started that badly.

“Last year we played in several different ways but we adapt to what the Coach says, although maybe last term we had more of the ball, but it’s still the points that are most important,” he added.
