Benzema: I never lost my confidence

Karim Benzema says he never lost confidence in himself after being left on the bench by boss Jose Mourinho at the start of the season.

The French international striker has been on the mark in the last three games against Rayo Vallecano, Manchester City and Millonarios and believes he has answered his detractors in the best possible way.

“I’ve felt good in the last few games and feel I’m progressing well. My legs are responding with every game,” he told AS, blaming a dearth of playing time this term on his lack of match sharpness.

“It’s true that it felt good to play 90 minutes twice for France against Finland and Belarus and it was important to get games under my belt. I’m working very hard to achieve maximum fitness.

“However, I never lost confidence because I’m always sure about myself and my game. When I don’t score everyone else makes a big thing of it but it doesn’t affect me.

“I’m a goalscorer and I love to put the ball in the net but everybody knows that I enjoy setting up others when I can.”

Benzema will be making his 100th La Liga appearance for Madrid on Sunday against Deportivo de La Coruna, the club he made his debut against in August 2009 after his signing from Lyon.
