Marchena: Depor will need perfection

Deportivo de La Coruna defender Carlos Marchena feels the Galicians will need a perfect performance to beat Real Madrid on Sunday.

“We will need to play a perfect game to win and Madrid will have to be slightly imperfect,” admitted Marchena in an interview with AS.

“We must be determined not to let them score early on because if they do then they’ll feel comfortable and start to play as they can.

“Right from the start we must do things right to try and win although from then on, depending on how the match is going, a draw would not be a bad result.”

The 33-year-old former Spanish international also claims he is also looking forward to locking horns with Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho again after the pair worked together in Portugal.

“I knew Mourinho when he started out with Benfica, but not for long. He took over from [Jupp] Heynckes and we won almost every game until he left.

“He taught me a lot and I only have good words to say about him. I’m glad how things have turned out.”

Despite the attacking potential posed by Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel di Maria, Marchena’s memories of Madrid go back even further when it comes to great goalscorers.

“There are many players from several teams who have kept me busy but perhaps the best was another Madrid player: Raul. He is an icon in Spanish football and around the world.

“I was lucky enough to have him as a teammate with the national side but with Madrid he made me suffer.”
