Lopetegui confirmed as U-21 Coach

Julen Lopetegui has been handed the position of Under-21 Coach of the Spanish national team on a permanent basis.

The tactician took over the role on an initial interim basis after Luis Milla left at the end of his contract in August, after failing to impress with an Under-23 side at the London 2012 Olympics.

Having finalised the team’s qualification to the play-off round for a place in next summer’s European Under-21 Championship, Lopetegui has done enough to be confirmed in the role until the end of that tournament.

Lopetegui, who has already signed his new contract, has previously worked with both the Under-19 and Under-20 squads, and this summer won the European Under-19 championship with the national side.

Spain’s Under-21s face Denmark in a two-legged tie in October for a place in next summer’s Euros.
