Mallorca’s Nunes appeal dismissed

Mallorca’s attempts to get Jose Nunes’ suspension wiped have been dismissed by the appeals committee today.

The islanders took their complaints to the Spanish Football Federation’s appeal section after seeing the defender hit with a one-game ban for ‘striking an opponent with his arm in the face, with play stopped, having been hit himself’.

The player was sent off last weekend away to Osasuna for a clash with Joseba Llorente in challenging for a high ball. Llorente was shown a straight red for using his elbow, whilst Nunes was given his marching orders for appearing to punch the striker when falling to the ground in the same incident.

His club had argued that the player’s movement was accidental and that there was no clear indication when Llorente and Nunes clashed that play had indeed already been halted by the referee.

However, the appeals committee have rejected their plea and the player will now miss the Sunday lunchtime kick-off at home to Valencia.
