‘The distance to Spain is still great’

Didier Deschamps has asserted that France’s hopes of topping their qualification group depend on Spain, who are still a ‘significant distance’ ahead.

World Cup and European Championship winner Deschamps leads Les Bleus in their 2014 World Cup qualifying group as Coach and will face Group I opponents Spain in mid-October.

“Spain are the favourites of the group, they are the team that has dominated Europe and the world for more than four years,” the 43-year-old told Le Monde today.

“The distance to Spain is still significant. However, the goal is not to finish second. What I have said to the players is that finishing first does not depend on us.

“Away to Spain will be the real test and where we finish will depend largely on the two games with Spain.”
