Jaime: Goalkeepers always the villains

Real Valladolid goalkeeper Jaime Jimenez says that the shot-stoppers ‘are always the villains and rarely the heroes’.

Jimenez’s late howler led to his side’s 1-0 defeat to Real Betis on Monday, yet the experienced 31-year-old believes ‘keepers are on a hiding to nothing when compared to outfield players.

“We are always the villains and rarely the heroes, but I am a masochist and I like being a goalkeeper,” he explained at a Press conference.

“You can help the team although at times, when you are not doing well, you can harm it. You are always the villain when things go wrong.

“This holds true when the team loses despite you having done nothing wrong, but a mistake can make you look a fool.”

Speaking of his error against Betis, Jimenez reflected that it had been something that was ‘unfortunate’ and ‘hard to put right’.

“I went to ground thinking that Ruben Castro was going to tackle me but I got it wrong and the ball slipped from my fingers.

“It happens once in a million times but it’s better it happens now than at other more important moments.

“It wasn’t a technical mistake, just an unfortunate accident.”

Jaime made it clear that to err was human and said he was grateful for the messages of support received from teammates, boss Miroslav Djukic and the fans.
Maintaining the matter is now closed, he said all his efforts would now be focused on stopping Atletico Madrid in Sunday’s game at the Vicente Calderon.
