Palop hits back at Varas accusation

Sevilla goalkeeper Andres Palop has hit back at Javi Varas’ accusation that the pair had a bad relationship in their time at Sevilla.

Varas was sent on a season-long loan to Celta Vigo during the summer and has since said the fact he did not get on with Palop [pictured] influenced his departure, something that the former Valencia player rejects.

“I do not understand the bad relationship I had with Varas. I would have preferred it that if he had any complaints he had told me and we could have argued it out,” Palop told Onda Cero’s Al Primer Toque programme.

“On a personal level I don’t think Varas can have any complaints from me. All I’ve done is to compete. If that’s being a bad teammate then I don’t even want to go there.

“I never went out to dinner with Varas but my relationship with him was always one of respect.”

Palop, who has been with Los Nervionenses seven years, believes Varas is being unfair in his reading of the situation.

“I’m 38 and football is hard, but I had a contract with Sevilla and no opportunities to leave.

“After so long at the club, and a season in which I played fewer games, for him to come out with these comments hurts me personally. I’ve put up with these things for a year and I don’t deserve it.

“I had to bite the bullet to try and reverse the situation. Ask [Sevilla boss] Michel and my teammates…they speak well of me. The truth only has one way,” he argued.

Finally, Palop referred to the current disagreement between Sevilla and some fans, who have announced they will boycott this weekend’s fixture with Real Madrid at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

“Sevilla needs the support of all fans and I wish they could sort things out. We must get rid of violence and get back the vibrancy, enthusiasm and strength.

“That’s the key to achieving our objectives,” he explained.
