Iraizoz: Focus on football

Gorka Iraizoz has urged the media to focus on the football and not the antics at Athletic Bilbao as they enter an ‘important month’.

The goalkeeper was responding directly to being asked his opinion on the reports this week that former player Javi Martinez had attempted to break into the club’s training ground complex to retrieve his remaining belongings.

“We are players and sometimes we can perform well, badly or average, but what we do is play football that is what should be important. The rest has nothing to do with it,” Iraizoz replied in similar fashion to Iker Muniain yesterday.

“We have a very important month ahead with the possibility of gaining momentum in both competitions, particularly in the Europa League, which last year gave us a lot of pleasure.”

The first game of the side’s important month is a visit to Iraizoz’ former club Espanyol, who the Basques have not won away to for over 14 years.

“It’s always special to visit them, but over the years it has become more normal for me, no-one from my time is there anymore.

“[The run without a win] shows that they are a tough opponent in the field, but we hope to break that streak so as to continue the positive momentum initiated from the win against Real Valladolid.”
