Luis: Atletico in Monaco one of the best

Former Atletico Madrid boss Luis Aragones has hailed the club’s performance against Chelsea in Monaco one of the best he has seen.

Aragones, referred to in Spain as the Wise Man of Hortaleza, believes the 4-1 European Super Cup win over the Londoners was one of the greatest in the club’s long and distinguished history.

“The match was an exhibition from Atletico against a class rival and in such an important European game. It was not a shock either.

“Atleti fought for and went for the win from the kick-off and they deserved it. It was great for the club and the supporters,” said Aragones in an interview with AS.

“Atletico has had some great games in its history, with some great teams and great players, but this was one of the best, at least in recent times.

“It was a complete performance and they dominated from start to finish against such a famous name.”

Aragones, whose own coaching career spanned 34 years, has nothing but praise for current boss Diego Simeone despite him having taken charge just nine months ago.

“El Cholo is doing great work with this team, there is no doubt about that. He has stamped his mark on it and given it his own personality.

“What he must do now is to continue in the same vein for the rest of the season, but what he is doing for Atletico is very important for the institution and the fans.”

The 74-year-old, who managed the club an incredible four times, feels the type of performance Los Rojiblancos produced against Chelsea must now be transferred to La Liga.

“Atleti need to show this consistency to be near the top of the table, but I’m convinced that with Simeone they will be up there.

“The club’s history and the players it has had shows it has to be among the first three or four.”

Finally, Aragones gave his verdict on Radamel Falcao, the hat-trick here of the Monaco final.

“He is a quality player with an eye for goal, who thrives in the area and is a great striker.

“Atletico need players like Falcao but behind him there needs to be others who also have to do great work,” he concluded.
