England star Wayne Rooney believes Lionel Messi is the greatest player of all time.
Rooney told fans in a Facebook Q&A that he believes the Barcelona striker is not just the best player in the world today, but also the best there has ever been.
“I just think the way he plays the game and the goals he scores – he just looks spectacular,” the Manchester United man said of the three-time Ballon d'Or winner.
“In my eyes anyway, Messi is the best ever.”
The striker's comments may disappoint his former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, who came in for criticism for his vanity in extracts from Rooney's new book published earlier this week.
Rooney and United have twice lost out to Barca and Messi in Champions League Finals, in 2009 and 2011.
