Europe ‘a tribute to Levante’

Levante captain Sergio Ballesteros says the fact the club are playing in the Europa League this season is a tribute to all the Levante supporters.

The 36-year-old was speaking on the 103rd anniversary of the club’s formation, with the team competing in Europe for the first time this season.

“I am delighted to have made history and to play with Levante in Europe, the club is going through very good times,” commented the veteran centre-back.

“Being in Europe and to play for the first time in a European competition could serve as a tribute to everyone for all the people and all the players on over 100 years of Levante.

“It is a very special for all the Levante fans as the success is just as much theirs as it is ours. I am delighted to make history and play for the team in Europe, and it is a very good time for the club.”

Ballesteros also reflected on Levante’s history, and the current period being perhaps one of the best in their history.

“I cannot comment if this is the best time in our history, but everything is being valued more after some complicated moments recently.

“Being in the Primera Division and competing in Europe, we are not the youngest team, but we’ve been doing a good job.

“For me it is very special as I was at the club before between 1994 and 1996 and played in all three Spanish Divisions.

“While playing in the League and achieving survival is also important, just being in Europe is a huge honour and a challenge for me.”
