Valencia ‘keeper Vicente Guaita has warned his teammates that they cannot afford to drop any more points after a difficult start to the new season.
Los Che have made a slow start under new boss Mauricio Pellegrino, picking up just two points from their first three games in La Liga, albeit having travelled away to both Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Guaita, however, acknowledges that the team cannot drop any more points if they are going to be at the top end of the table at the end of the season.
“Hopefully it [dropping points] will not happen again because there are many points along the way that are very important to us.
“We have to start picking up more points because we are distance from the top [of the table] and we have to progress as quickly as possible during the season.”
The former Recreativo loanee has also spoken of his relief that he is returning to first-team action, after sitting out of pre-season through injury, even if he faces a fight for his place.
“I really wanted to come back after not being able to play in pre-season. I’ve returned and I feel perfect. There was no discomfort after the game or anything.
“When will I play? That is up to the Coach, but I'll try to help the team every weekend, that's why I'm here, and to try to play as much as possible. Until now, Diego [Alves] has been playing, but I'm going to try and challenge him.
“We all want to play as many games as possible, if you can play 40 it is better than 30, if you can play 50 then it’s better than 40, but ultimately the decision lies with the Coach, and if he decides for us to rotate, we will always do this ensuring the benefit of Valencia.”
