Montanier hails Griezmann renewal

Real Sociedad boss Philippe Montanier has hailed Antoine Griezmann’s decision to sign a contract renewal with the club as ‘good news’.

The French Under-21 international penned a deal this week that will keep him at Anoeta until June 2016, something Montanier considers crucial to the Txuri-urdins’ future plans.

‘Real are constructing a short-to-long-term project with the best players from the club’s youth academy.

“I’m very happy Griezmann has renewed because it’s good news for all Sociedad supporters,” the Frenchman told a Press conference.

Montanier takes his team to face Real Mallorca in the Iberostar Stadium on Saturday, the scene of a 6-1 hammering last season, and is aware it will not be easy against Joaquin Caparros’ resurgent Islanders.

“Mallorca is a place I have bad memories of, but this is a different game,” he insisted. “Besides, last time we reacted by going to Mestalla and winning.”

However, he is aware Real must improve their away record away if they are to hold any hopes of a European spot this term.

“We need to concede fewer goals and find a balance between defence and attack. My challenge is to ensure the forwards are the first point of defence.

“One of our aims is to have a good season away from Anoeta. We have the quality and means to achieve it,” he added.
