Soldado didn’t expect Spain call

Roberto Soldado admits that he wasn’t expecting to be called up to Spain’s latest squad, but reflects that he will make the most of the chance.

The Valencia striker missed out on a place at Euro 2012 to Sevilla man Alvaro Negredo, but in Vicente del Bosque’s squad for games with Saudi Arabia and Georgia, has pipped his rival for a position in the attacking options.

“It is always important to be called up for La Seleccion and now it is for a friendly and a World Cup qualifier,” enthused Soldado today.

“Hopefully this situation can be repeated. I’ve said many times that competition for a place in the squad is very strong. I am realistic and know that it will not be easy, but we must take the opportunity when it is provided to us by the Coach.”

The striker also hinted that he would be happy to be tried out of position too.

“Those of us called up will try to convince the Coach we can provide many things for the team.”
