Karanka: Real could have scored more

Real Madrid assistant boss Aitor Karanka believes the Spanish champions should have scored more than two goals against Barcelona.

Early strikes from Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo proved enough for Real to win the Supercopa de Espana on away goals following the 4-4 aggregate draw, yet former Real player Karanka felt Los Blancos might have won more comfortably.

“If we had taken our first-half chances and those we had later on then the margin of victory would have been greater.

”However, we now have the title, which is the most important thing,” said Karanka, who was answering questions at the post-match Press conference following boss Jose Mourinho’s promise he would leave it to his assistant if Madrid won.

Mourinho had challenged his players to show their commitment to the club after a poor start to the season and Karanka felt the 2-1 triumph against arch-rivals Barca was the way to answer the critics.

“Everyone saw it, the way we went at them in the first-half. We could have done more in the second although we carried on playing the same way we have done for the last few years.

”Now we have to continue with this kind of attitude,” he explained.
