Atleti divided over Chelsea strength

Where Filipe Luis believes Chelsea are looking formidable, Juanfran Torres and Miranda believe the UEFA Super Cup will be an even affair.

The Europa League winners Atleti are preparing for Friday’s UEFA competition showpiece against Champions League winners Chelsea in Monaco. The Super Cup is a competition that both teams have previously won once.

“Chelsea have the upper hand, but even though we lost Diego in the summer, we have a very strong team with a lot of ambition,” the Brazilian told today’s Press gathering.

“The last Super Cup I did not feel entitled to be a part of, because I wasn’t there in Hamburg [when they won the 2010 Europa League].

“But now I feel good, with my recent injury I was concerned about missing out on the final.”

However, teammates Juanfran does not believe that Atleti are further behind their London opponents.

“There are no favourites in this final, we have much potential,” the converted right-back contradicted.

“From Chelsea I get on with [Fernando] Torres and [Juan] Mata, who were with me at the Euros. They are great people and I wish them well, but only from after this game.”

Similarly, centre-back Miranda reflected that the Spanish won’t be changing their game to fit around The Blues.

“On Friday we won’t make any special plans for defending against Chelsea,” the defender stated today.

“We defend in a zone and in a system that has proven to be very strong and very difficult for opponents to break through.”
