Bielsa slams ‘impotent’ Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao boss Marcelo Bielsa described his team as ‘impotent’ after the 4-0 loss to Atletico Madrid at the Vicente Calderon.

In addition, the Argentine admitted his concern after defeat in the opening two games of the season with nine goals conceded.

“It was a fair result and could have been worse. The difference was reflected in the score and we were impotent against the size of our opponents,” a disappointed Bielsa told a Press conference.

“At no time were we equal to them and they were more powerful than us in most aspects of the game.

“Overall it was a deserved result. Atletico easily neutralised what we were trying to do and we could not stop them.

“It was a collective thing and is an area in which I have influence, so I will need to make some decisions.”

The Basques had Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente missing once again, both players possibly departing the club before the end of the transfer window, yet Bielsa considered their absence had no bearing on his side’s performance.

“They had no influence on the team. We are going through a bad phase and it’s impossible not to generate concern about it.

“I don’t expect to sort it out through the arrival of new signings but the results are nothing to do with any players who are not participating at the moment.

“We are a different team to what we showed today,” he added.
