6,000 to follow Atleti in Monaco

Atletico Madrid will have 6,000 fans roaring them on when they travel to Monaco for Friday’s European Super Cup final against Chelsea.

According to AS, Los Rojiblancos have received an avalanche of requests for tickets after they sold out in just five days, with many trying to get hold of them through UEFA’s website.

The club’s official party – made up of players, directors and invited guests – will leave Madrid on Wednesday but the bulk of supporters have decided to travel on the day of the game.

Around 900 will head to Monte Carlo in the early hours of Friday morning on five planes chartered by the club.

Others are making their own way to the game via cheap flights to nearby cities such as Marseille, Genoa and Nice, while some will make the 12-hour trip by road, a distance of 1,282 kilometres.

The response has been much greater than the last time Atleti played in the final in 2010 when tickets were available up to two months prior to the clash with Inter, which the Spanish side won 2-0 with goals from Jose Antonio Reyes and Sergio Aguero.

The Super Cup has been held at the Stade Louis II for the last 15 seasons but will be played at different stadiums from 2013 onwards, starting with Prague’s 21,000-capacity Synot Tip Arena, generally known as Eden Stadium.
