Celta put faith in Herrera

Celta Vigo President Carlos Mourino is in the process of renewing Coach Paco Herrera’s contract, with a view to a long-term project.

Herrera, whose current deal expires next summer, spent time with Liverpool as Rafa Benitez’s assistant manager.

He has been earmarked by Mourino as one to progress with beyond this season, and perhaps in an English manner.

“I have always said I want the English style of management, where Coaches have to make decisions about the signings and contracts are only the worry of the technical secretary,” the President of the newly-promoted Galicians told Efe this week.

That model of organisation is one Mourino has said he is very close to achieving with his current set-up, and one he would like to continue with for a very long time.

Celta earned promotion under Herrera last season at the second attempt, and are still adjusting to the rigours of top-flight football after a narrow defeat to Malaga in their opener last weekend.

Extending the 58-year-old’s deal would also see assistant Angel Rodriguez and fitness Coach Fran Albert also stay on.
