Rakitic: I’m here only to play

Ivan Rakitic is determined to cement a first-team role with Sevilla this season, promising to work to stay away from the bench.

The Croatian is into his second full season with the Andalucians and is aiming to improve on last term, where although he played in 36 League games, only half were starts.

“All of us here want to play. I never want to see even a single game from the bench,” the 24-year-old declared today.

“I signed my contract to play, this is normal. I’m going to continue working so as to play. And I will be far from the bench. I’m not worried about this because I know what I can do.

“I can say that because I feel good, I have no trouble and I can do my job. I had a very good step with Croatia in the European Championships, I want to continue with that work.

“I know I can still improve and I will follow that path. But, the Coach knows me, he has also seen the bad part of me and I do not want him to see that again. I want him and you to be happy with me.

“I can still improve a lot of things. I’m happy with my game, but I can improve. I feel very good, but it would have been perfect to score [at the weekend].

“I was five centimetres away, which is a small amount, but I still missed.”
