Cristiano Ronaldo insists Real Madrid must keep their moral up, despite a surprising 1-1 draw with Valencia in their opening La Liga game.

“It wasn’t our best match, the first half was particularly hard, the second was better,” the No 7 reflected. “We also had several key opportunities we did not take, but we have to keep our heads held high and move on.”

The Portuguese winger also admitted he was quiet throughout, but put it down to his fitness levels.

“I’m still not at my peak level of fitness, but this is normal. I’m not 100 per cent, but I intend to reach it over the next few days.”

Ronaldo proceeded to comment on fellow countryman Pepe’s head injury from a collision with goalkeeper Iker Casillas, which resulted in Valencia’s equaliser.

“Pepe is still in hospital right now, his health of the upmost importance to the team as he is a vital player.”

Real Madrid will face off with rivals Barcelona in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Thursday, and the 27-year-old winger is looking forward to the occasion.

“It is a colossal game, especially because it against our biggest rivals in Barcelona. I look forward to it and we will work hard to grind out a result.”
