Higuain to extend Madrid contract

Gonzalo Higuain will extend his contract with Real Madrid until 2016 as Jose Mourinho looks to sign up his star men on long-term deals.

The Argentine international is expected to pen the new agreement within the next few weeks, according to Enrique Marques of Marca TV’s Futboleros programme.

Higuain, nicknamed El Pipita, has been heavily linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu over the past few months after being forced to play second fiddle in the striking department to Karim Benzema for much of last season.

However, the 24-year-old’s situation with the Spanish giants has changed considerably recently, following a conversation with boss Jose Mourinho and the support of the Madrid public in light of the club’s La Liga title success last term.

It is understood that Higuain’s salary will remain at the same level, a reported €4.5m per season, although his representatives are believed to have asked for an increase.

President Florentino Perez will now attempt to tie a few more of his major players down to improved contracts – Esteban Granero, Xabi Alonso and Cristiano Ronaldo are all due to hold talks – as Madrid seek to guarantee stability among the squad for at least the next three seasons.
