Llorente to leave Athletic

Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente has informed the club he will not be signing a new deal and wishes to leave.

President Josu Urrutia confirmed the Spanish international’s decision at a Press conference whilst also maintaining the player would not be allowed to depart the San Mames unless the €36m rescission clause in his contract is met.

Urrutia explained that 10 days ago Llorente’s representatives told him the 27-year-old had made up his mind not to renew his current agreement, which expires in June 2014.

“It was not for economic reasons but more because he wanted to play in other championships,” continued Urrutia.

“It is a great disappointment to me and it is no comfort that clubs are offering €12m, €14m or €16m for him because we have been talking about his renewal for over a year.

“Athletic is not a selling club and our policy is not to do business with player’s who do not want to spend their career here.”
