Xabi Alonso may reject Madrid offer

A report in Sport claims Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso could reject the offer of a new contract at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Spanish international is understood to have decided, for now, not to take up the Madrid board’s proposal of an extension until 2016.

Alonso’s current deal expires in June 2014 and several clubs are thought to have tempted him with sizeable offers, but boss Jose Mourinho will make it his priority to keep a player he considers fundamental to his team.

In recent weeks Alvaro Arbeloa, Raul Albiol and Angel Di Maria have all penned long-term agreements, while Gonzalo Higuain, Pepe and Sergio Ramos are expected to be next on the list.

However, Alonso may have thrown a spanner into the works as the Portuguese attempts to get all his big guns to commit their futures to the club, while Press reports in Italy suggest Juventus are keeping a close eye on the situation.

The 30-year-old is aware his next contract will be his last big one and is hoping Madrid come back with an improved financial suggestion.
