Celta Vigo to sign Velez midfielder

Celta Vigo have reached a verbal agreement to sign midfielder Augusto Fernandez from Velez Sarsfield, reports La Voz de Galicia.

The 26-year-old’s capture is subject to a medical and he will become boss Paco Herrera’s fourth acquisition of the summer, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Javi Varas and defenders Gustavo Cabral and Samuel Llorca.

“He is not a natural goalscorer but will help us in other areas,” commented Herrera.

Fernandez has represented Argentina twice, both times against Brazil, and began his professional career at River Plate where he won the 2008 Clausura under current Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone.

However, in August 2010 he decided to try his luck in Europe when he joined Saint-Etienne, although his time with the French club was unsuccessful and he made just 12 League starts before returning to his native country with Velez.

Los Celestes are hopeful the deal for Fernandez will be completed in time for the player to make to make his debut in the friendly with Wigan Athletic at Balaidos next Sunday.
