Deportivo tempt Marchena

Deportivo de La Coruna are trying to tempt veteran defender Carlos Marchena to Riazor, claims Marca.

Depor boss Jose Luis Oltra is seeking an experienced centre-back to marshal his back line on the club’s return to the top flight, and sees former Spanish international Marchena as the ideal candidate.

The 33-year-old has been told by recently-relegated Villarreal he does not figure in their plans for next season as he is one of the club’s high earners, with President Fernando Roig anxious to offload him before the start of the 2012-13 Segunda campaign.

The player’s agents will attempt to thrash out the rescission of his contract at El Madrigal within the next few days, which will make him a free agent.

However, the Galicians are not the only ones interested in the former Sevilla, Benfica and Valencia player as Real Mallorca boss Joaquin Caparros is also monitoring the situation.

The Islanders need to replace Ivan Ramis, who recently joined compatriot Roberto Martinez at Wigan Athletic, but Marchena has also had proposals from both the United States and China.
