Mata disappointed at Spain exit

Spain midfielder Juan Mata said he was ´disappointed` at his country’s Olympic Games exit following the 0-0 draw with Morocco.

The Old Trafford clash ensured Luis Milla’s team did not register a single goal in their three Group D games, although the Spanish had no chance of qualifying before the start of the match having surprisingly lost to both Japan and Honduras.

“We came here with the hope of doing great things but after the second game we were unable to do anything,” said Mata in comments made to the Spanish Football Federation.

“We are disappointed and angry as we wanted to reach the final to give a good impression of ourselves because we were defending the Spanish shirt, and that is what we tried to do.”

In addition, the Chelsea man believed that despite the lack goals the players still fought with pride.

“The image we gave will remain with us all. We could not win a game nor score a goal, but something this team has is pride and we showed that to the end.

“We were unsuccessful. There has been some bad luck but also a lack of finishing power.

“If you don’t score a goal in three games then it is difficult to qualify,” he added.
