La Rojita beat Mexico 1-0

The Spanish Olympic side completed their preparations for the London Games with a 1-0 victory over Mexico in Cadiz.

Luis Milla's men had suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Senegal last Friday but a header from Javi Martinez on 14 minutes proved enough to down the Mexicans in the Estadio Ramon de Carranza.

The hosts started brightly and went ahead with the first real chance of the game, Martinez heading home an Adrian corner, but the Mexicans could easily have levelled as Giovani dos Santos and Javier Aquino both missed decent opportunities.

However, Corona had to pull off a fine stop at the other end to deny Martin Montoya, while Adrian should have doubled Spain’s advantage when he was through on goal but failed to find the back of the net.

After the break both sides struggled to create any clear-cut chances, although substitutes Cesar Azpilicueta and Alvaro Vazquez both went close, but Martinez’s goal ultimately settled the encounter to put the Spaniards in good heart for their opening Group D game against Japan in Glasgow on July 26.
