Barcelona’s participation in last season’s Champions League swelled the club’s coffers by €40.5m, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The figure was the third best in the 2011-12 competition after finalists Chelsea and Bayern Munich, who earned €59.9m and €41.7m respectively, and was over €2m more than Spanish rivals Real Madrid’s €38.4m.
Pep Guardiola’s men reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by Chelsea, and taking into account that the Catalans more often than not reach the latter stages it has now become the club’s second highest source of income.
Barca’s contract with Mediapro, the company that owns the rights to televise live Spanish football, is worth €120m per season, yet the €40.5m received from UEFA is now considerably more than the money earned from sponsorship deals with both Nike and the Qatar Foundation.
