Malaga to ditch Mediapro

Malaga have announced plans to dissolve their contract with Mediapro, the company that owns the rights to live televised matches.

AS reports that business development manager Vicente Casado will take advantage of the annual meeting of the Spanish Football Federation on Tuesday to inform Javier Thebes, a former Vice-President of the Spanish League, that the Costa del Sol club wishes to cancel the existing contract that binds it to Mediapro, which it considers 'damaging' and 'obsolete'.

The Malaga executive do not want to cause a fracture among La Liga clubs but feel the €14m per season they currently receive – the lowest in La Primera last term alongside Rayo Vallecano, Granada, Racing Santander and Real Sociedad – is clearly inadequate for a team that finished fourth in the 2011-12 season and qualified for the Champions League.

The present agreement ends in 2014, when the figure will rise to around €22m, but Los Blanquiazules still consider this insufficient and want the right to negotiate freely with other operators, from whom they have had far more serious proposals.

Malaga owner Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani was particularly critical of the way television money is shared out in Spain via his Twitter account this week, when he denounced what he believes to be discriminatory treatment his club receives in regard to others.
