Michel hangs up his boots at Rayo

Rayo Vallecano captain Miguel Angel Sanchez Munoz, known as Michel, has decided to hang up his boots.

The 36-year-old will officially announce the news on Wednesday and is set to take on a coaching role with Los Franjirrojos, where he will be responsible for the club’s youth academy and also work closely with new first-team boss Paco Jemez.

It is understood the midfielder – who began his career with the Madrid outfit in 1992 before spells with Almeria, Murcia and Malaga – is believed to have turned down an offer from abroad to remain at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas.

In the 2010-11 season Michel contributed with three goals in 20 League games as Rayo returned to the top flight after an eight-year absence, but last term he started just four times – twice in La Liga and twice in the Copa del Rey.
