Veteran left-back Joan Capdevila is on the verge of a return to La Liga with Espanyol, reports Mundo Deportivo.
The Spanish World Cup winner signed for Benfica last summer on a free transfer from Villarreal but is no longer part of boss Jorge Jesus’ plans at the Estadio da Luz, having made just five League appearances last season.
However, it is understood the 34-year-old had lunch with Espanyol boss Mauricio Pochettino and director of football Ramon Planes this week and talks are at an advanced stage for him to make a return to the club with which he started his professional career.
Los Periquitos have been without a left-hand sided defender since Didac Vila’s return to Milan at the end of last term following a season-long loan, and with the Catalans currently suffering financial problems Capdevila is seen as the ideal short-term replacement as he would not command a fee.
