Thiago ruled out of Olympics

Thiago Alcantara has been officially ruled out of Luis Milla’s Olympic squad with a tibia injury, according to a club statement.

“Tests were carried out to access the state of Thiago Alcantara’s tibia injury and results confirm that the injury has not been overcome and the player will have to continue his recovery process over the coming weeks.

“Therefore he will not receive the medical all-clear before the Olympics in London,” it read.

Thiago is understood to be almost two months away from full recovery and Milla has now called up Real Sociedad’s Asier Illaremendi to replace him in the 22-man squad, which will be reduced to 18 after friendlies against Senegal and Mexico in Gran Canaria and Cadiz respectively.

Milla’s men will then travel to the United Kingdom on July 20 before commencing their Group D fixtures against Japan, Honduras and Morocco.
