Espanyol withdraw from Supercopa

The Supercopa de Catalunya has been cancelled following Espanyol’s decision to pull out after a disagreement over dates.

The game between Los Periquitos and Barcelona was originally scheduled for July 31  but was shelved after La Blaugrana made it known their intention was to field a reserve side to avoid the risk of injury to their star players.

However, despite it being announced that the game would now take place on September 26 – a date Barca had agreed to – it has again been called off as Espanyol argue it would be detrimental put their best team out as it falls between weeks five and six of the La Liga calendar – unlike if it had been staged during pre-season.

“We are not going to cover up the problems of other clubs because it is clear who is to blame here. We cannot give the impression that nothing has happened,” declared Espanyol’s chief executive officer Joan Collet in a Press conference at Cornella El-Prat.

“If they understand the reasons of others then I guess that also means they will understand our own for not wanting to play on September 26.”
