Pique: Mikel Roque was with us

Gerard Pique said the presence of Miki Roque, who recently died from cancer, was always with him and his teammates at Euro 2012.

The Spain defender took time out from the celebrations following the 4-0 final defeat of Italy to remember the former Real Betis player who lost his life last month.

“Miki and his family were very much in our presence,” Pique told Tele 5 after the game in Kiev.

As for the final itself, the Barcelona man was very pleased with his side’s defensive display, not only against the Italians but also throughout the whole tournament.

“At a defensive level we were excellent, not just the back four but also Iker Casillas in goal, and the team overall played very well.

“It was important for us not to concede any goals in the final and we were lucky enough to score, because chances will always come our way.

“In the first half we didn’t have much of the ball but from the two opportunities we had we scored both times.

“With Motta’s injury it was a lot easier after they were left with 10 men,” he added.
