Xabi: Euro 2008 was different

Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso considers his country’s Euro 2012 triumph was different to that of four years ago.

The Real Madrid man could not hide his delight in declarations made to Cadena Ser’s El Larguero programme, but says the feelings were different to those when Spain won the 2008 tournament and everything was a little more low-key.

“We could have been more euphoric but you cannot force situations and we are celebrating with our families,” said the 30-year-old.

“We are very humble and now we want to meet the people and celebrate with them.”

Speaking of the victory and a record three consecutive wins at major tournaments, Alonso considers it an historic achievement.

“To do three in a row is incredible because it is the first time that something like this has been done in football,” he declared.

“It is difficult to compare us to other teams but I’m sure this team will take its place in history.

“We showed what we could do on the pitch and words are just words, so there is nothing more to say.”
