Zidane takes on new role at Real

Zinedine Zidane is to be handed a new role at Real Madrid as he takes the first steps towards becoming a Coach.

The former Juventus and Madrid player joined the staff at the Santiago Bernabeu in November 2010, acting as a special advisor between the players and the club’s hierarchy at the express request of boss Jose Mourinho.

He was subsequently appointed director of football in July 2011, but will now realise the ambition he revealed at a Press conference on his retirement from football in 2006: to work with the youngsters at Real Madrid.

“Zinedine Zidane will shortly commence training to be a Coach whilst also working with the Madrid academy,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

Zidane, 40, will be working alongside former Los Blancos player Juan Esnaider who returned to the Spanish capital last month after a stint as boss of the Real Zaragoza B team.

Esnaider has been made youth academy director on the recommendation of Zidane, with whom he played at Juventus.
