Hamburg agree to pay Barca €800,000

Hamburg have decided to pay Barcelona the €800,000 outstanding from Tuesday’s pre-season friendly between the two clubs.

Mundo Deportivo reports that the Germans had originally agreed to pay La Blaugrana €1.2m for their participation in the game, held to celebrate the Bundesliga club’s 125th anniversary.

However, the absence of Lionel Messi through injury incurred a €400,000 penalty for the Catalans and not the €360,000 as had been previously suggested.

Messi’s non-appearance meant Tito Vilanova’s men took the field with 12 reserve team players on show and Hamburg, who lost the game 2-1, asked their lawyers to study the contract to see if there was the possibility of legal action.

However, Hamburg director of marketing Joachim Hike says his club has chosen to draw a line under the matter instead of paying Barca a reduced sum.

“We have decided to leave it alone because we believe that Barcelona are already upset because of the financial damage they have suffered,” Hike told local media.
