Espanyol track Birmingham City striker

Espanyol are eyeing Birmingham City striker Nikola Zigic if they are unsuccessful in prising Felipe Caicedo away from Lokomotiv Moscow.

Mundo Deportivo reports that the 6ft 7in Serbian international is not comfortable with the idea of playing in the English Championship again next season and is understood to be desperate for a return to Spain, where he spent a season with Racing Santander before three years with Valencia.

The 31-year-old has a contract at St Andrew’s until June 2014 but Espanyol will be prepared to return for a player they were chasing in last winter’s transfer window before deciding on Kalu Uche, although Zigic would need to lower his wage demands as he is still on a Premier League salary at Birmingham.

However, Caicedo is still the preferred option and the Ecuador international is open to a return to La Liga after his successful time at Levante, his 13 goals in 27 La Liga games instrumental in keeping Los Granotes in the top flight before he was snapped up by the Russians for €7.5m.
