VDV empathises with Modric

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has backed Luka Modric for wanting to sign for Real Madrid this summer.

His comments come after Croatian midfielder Modric reportedly refused to travel with the Spurs squad for their pre-season tour of America.

Los Blancos have been tracking the Croatia international for much of the summer and today are linked with making another assault on the Spurs player.

Upon missing his flight to Los Angeles, Modric has been fined heavily by the club. However, he has had support from current teammate and former Real midfielder Van der Vaart, who recognises that it is a ‘difficult situation’ for the 26-year-old.

“You can’t compare Real Madrid with other teams because they are the biggest team in the world,” Van der Vaart told Sky Sports News.

“It was really an honour that I played there and I’m still really thankful. I think every player wants to play there.”

The Dutchman also revealed today that he has spoken with Modric regarding the interest from Real and is hopeful the situation can be resolved soon.

“I went to Luka’s house and spoke to him after training. I told him what happened to me when I wanted to sign for Real [from Hamburg],” he stated in AS.

“I’ve been one of the closest people to Modric in the dressing room and I feel for him. It is a difficult situation.

“The chairman is angry, but Luka is very upset with what is happening. I think everything will be fixed in three or four days.”
