Former Barcelona and Real Madrid forward spends night in the cells

Former Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla and Malaga forward Javier Saviola did not have the most auspicious start to this week, waking up in a prison cell.

The 42-year-old spent the 2022-23 season as part of Barcelona’s under-19 coaching staff but left last summer, and it is unclear whether he has gotten back into the game. On Sunday night, and into the early hours of Monday morning, Saviola was caught driving under the influence of alcohol.

As per Altaveu, and carried by MD, Saviola failed a breathalyser test in Andorra around 04:40am, after he was pulled over by the police in a routine check. The ex-Argentina international was over double the blood alcohol limit, and was taken to the police station thereafter. He has since been released, but will face a fine, and potentially the loss of his driving licence for the next year, which will be the extent of his punishment.
