Athletic Club have announced that Unai Simon has signed a new five-year deal with club until 2029, extending his 15-year stay at the club to two decades, should he complete the duration of it.

Simon, 26, expressed his desire to do just that, and also told the club media that he had the ‘very ambitious’ goal of becoming the best goalkeeper in the world while still at Athletic. Simon has been at the club since the age of 11, and is expected to go into the Euros this summer as Spain’s number one, with 39 caps to his name already. For Athletic, he has made 193 appearances and kept 65 clean sheets. He is also on the verge of winning the Zamora award this season, and will do so with a clean sheet against Rayo Vallecano in their final game of the season.

Simon is set to become one of pillars of this Athletic team, following on from the exit of Iker Muniain and Raul Garcia. There was no release clause reported in his contract, unusually for a Spanish player.
