Atletico Madrid forced to move on from midfield target due to financial concerns

Atletico Madrid are considering signing a new midfielder during the upcoming transfer window, although after Wednesday night’s Europa League final, they have been forced to abandon one of their targets, that being Atalanta’s Ederson dos Santos.

As per Marca, Atleti have been long-time admirers of the Brazilian, and he was on their shortlist of midfield targets for the summer. However, after his fantastic performance during Atalanta’s sensational 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin, club bosses anticipate his price rising, which will put them out of the race.

Despite this, Atleti’s options are extensive, with the likes of Matt O’Riley, Mats Wieffer and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg on their list of targets. Whether a move for any is made will depend on the club’s finances, as defenders and a new striker is also wanted by Diego Simeone.

It should be a busy summer for Atletico Madrid, with multiple upgrades needed for the start of next season. Much like many clubs in La Liga, their spending will be determined by strict financial rules.
